In the business ecosystem, there are a variety of actors who participate in different ways throughout the life cycle of a startup. They ensure that competition thrives, thereby fostering constant movement. Companies compete for available resources and the services and products they offer.
It is clear that competition is one of the most important pillars of the business ecosystem, as it serves as an incentive for new ideas to emerge in the market. Thus, every day we see new companies emerge—with limited resources but promising projects—as well as large enterprises that stand the test of time.
As a result, the business ecosystem is evolving and is now focused on cooperation among competitors to find a sustainable balance over time. This is how the open innovation.
Now then, What is meant by open innovation, or Open Innovation?
It is a management strategy or model that enables companies to generate new ideas and solutions through the exchange of resources. It is a modern, trending term attributed to Prof. Henry Chesbrough, an American.
Open innovation fosters external collaboration with other companies. This allows companies not only to seek solutions to their problems through new ideas and projects using their internal resources, but also to explore what other companies have to offer.
This highlights the opportunity to co-create, share, and exchange ideas, as well as to gain experience and knowledge from other companies. In this way, all participants benefit in ways that meet their specific needs.
So, What would be the benefits or advantages of adopting open innovation?
Although there are several advantages, these will depend primarily on the negotiations and exchanges carried out by the companies. Some of them are as follows:
- Explore new markets. Innovative projects emerge through the exchange of ideas.
- Apply the crowdsourcing, to delegate tasks to people outside the company, thereby gaining a different perspective on situations and lightening the workload of in-house talent.
- Attracting new talent.
- The opportunity to receive support from established brands.
- Reaching new customers.
- Raising funds through investment rounds.
Likewise, companies will wonder What challenges does open innovation present?
One of the most important challenges of open innovation is establishing appropriate and sufficient boundaries between companies that exchange resources and collaborate on new ideas.
Partnerships—in this case, between companies—always come with terms and conditions governing the mutual collaboration. Therefore, precisely defining the scope of that collaboration is a challenge for entrepreneurs, business owners, and lawyers alike.
The exchange of human and economic capital, new ideas, technological contributions, experiences, and knowledge implies that, to a certain extent, one company must know quite a bit about the other. For these reasons, avoiding the violation of trade secrets and respecting the protection of intellectual property in projects are constant challenges, and establishing the appropriate boundaries is essential.
Open innovation typically occurs between large companies and startups (startups). In this scenario, contractual boundaries help each party understand its position and its role in the exchange strategy. This enables small businesses to expand with the support of large companies, while the latter can reinvent themselves with innovative ideas without absorbing the smaller ones, which will continue to grow.
The advance of the Open Innovation in Paraguay.
For some time now, Paraguay has been growing thanks to a number of companies established in various sectors. We are seeing the emergence of new ventures in innovative fields, which pave an exciting path toward open innovation, as competition becomes more dynamic and sparks a drive for new ideas. Collaboration and the exchange of knowledge, experiences, and talent must serve as pillars for creating harmony and balance within the business ecosystem.
In this context, it is very encouraging to note that the “” project is currently underway in Paraguay:“OpnX: Open Innovation”, an initiative of IDB LAB in cooperation with the Paraguayan Industrial Union, which aims to connect existing solutions to the problems, challenges, or opportunities that large companies may face. The project brings together small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and startups that can partner with companies seeking solutions to trending issues, such as technological innovations in various sectors, including finance, the environment, and commerce, among others.
¹ The term crowdsourcing, It is used to refer to a process of outsourcing by a company, through which the company entrusts decisions, tasks, and projects to a community of people who are able to contribute to and collaborate with a specific area of the company, working independently and outside the company.
