The European Union and Mercosur signed a trade agreement on Saturday, January 17, 2026 in the Paraguayan capital, after more than 25 years of negotiations. This agreement establishes one of the the world's largest free trade zones, accounting for 30% of global GDP and more than 700 million consumers.
The agreement eliminates tariffs on more than 90% of bilateral trade. It facilitates European exports of automobiles, machinery, wines, and spirits to the countries of the South American bloc, while allowing imports of meat, sugar, rice, honey, and soybeans from the region.
Exports from the European Union to Mercosur are projected to increase by 39%, and exports from Mercosur to the European Union are projected to increase by 17%.
