The European Union and Mercosur signed a trade agreement on <\/span>Saturday, January 17, 2026<\/span><\/strong> in the Paraguayan capital<\/strong>, after more than 25 years of negotiations. This agreement establishes one of the <\/strong><\/span>the world's largest free trade zones<\/span><\/strong>, accounting for 30% of global GDP and more than 700 million consumers.<\/span><\/p>

The agreement <\/span>eliminates tariffs on more than 90%<\/span><\/strong> of bilateral trade.<\/strong> It facilitates European exports of automobiles, machinery, wines, and spirits to the countries of the South American bloc, while allowing imports of meat, sugar, rice, honey, and soybeans from the region.<\/span><\/p>

Exports from the European Union to Mercosur are projected to increase by 39%, and exports from Mercosur to the European Union are projected to increase by 17%.<\/span><\/p>
